This one is a rare little beauty and find. Stainless pocket knife enclosed inside a double sided detailed brass mermaid filled with character and charm. Perfect for the mermaid lover, your favorite fisherman or the Pisces or Aquarius in your life.
Mermaid has some weight to it in your hand and measures just over 4 inches folded and 8 inches open (see 3rd and 4th item photos for scale). Blade is stainless steel marked with "Taiwan or China" on one side. Knife contains minor wear and marks as pictured due to vintage nature.
Each knife is unique in color and most have a brushed brass finish. Due to the nature of the metal some are darker or show more character but the physical shape and size are identical.
STORY:
-----------------
This mermaid isn't what she appears to be at first look, much like the legends claim...
Legends say the siren was portrayed as a seductresses, who lived on an island called Sirenum scopuli. Sailors who sailed near were compelled by the Sirens' enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast.
Much like sirens, mermaids would sometimes sing to people and gods and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or run their ships aground. Other stories have them squeezing the life out of drowning men while attempting to rescue them. They are also said to take humans down to their underwater kingdoms. In Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, it is said that they forget that humans cannot breathe underwater, while others say they drown men out of spite.
The sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore as mermaid-like; in fact, some languages use the same word for both bird and fish creatures, such as the Maltese word 'sirena'.
